Assault Legislation
The assault bill in the Senate S-221 sponsored by Conservative Senator Bob Runciman reached second reading on the 4th of June and was referred to committee the same day. It has passed through the senate and will be introduced in the House of Commons in the next session.
In the House of Commons Bill C-533 An Act to amend the Criminal Code (protecting public transportation workers) sponsored by Liberal MP Ralph Goodale was given its introduction and first reading in the House of Commons in June of 2013. The bill is not dead yet and in May, 2014, Mr. Goodale held a roundtable discussion with members of ATU Local 1505 Winnipeg to hear their personal experiences with assaults and how they relate to this effort to have the Criminal Code of Canada updated to exact harsher punishments for those who assault public transportation service employees.

Development Charges Legislation
Development charges are one-time fees levied by municipalities on residential and non-residential properties to help pay for a portion of the growth-related capital infrastructure requirements. The ATUCC is exploring the possibility of working with provincial and national transit bodies (e.g. OPTA and CUTA) as well as community and social justice groups in an effort to enshrine dedicated funding for transit in Provincial Acts governing development charges or levies.
