Brother Burke passed away peacefully at Constitution Place in Mississauga on Tuesday January 27, 2015.
Brother Burke, beloved husband of the late Gertrude (nee Brewer) and son of the late James and Mary Burke, was in his 92nd year. He was predeceased by his siblings; William, Margaret, Thomas, Edward and Kathleen.
Art was a bus driver with Grey Coach Lines and held various positions as a Local union official with the Amalgamated Transit Union. He was appointed as an international vice president in 1971 and was elected into the same position at the following International Convention. He held that position until his retirement in 1983. Art served overseas in WWII with the Royal Canadian Dragoons. He saw service in England, Italy, Holland and Germany. He was wounded in 1944 in Italy but returned to the Regiment. He returned home to Canada in August 1945 and received his discharge in October 1945.
Brother Burke was around when the Canadian Council was first formed and remained supportive of the Council attending our annual conference whenever possible. Although he always shared his experiences, his knowledge and wisdom will be missed. A service was held for Brother Burke on Saturday, January 31, 2015.
