Saskatoon transit union members to return to regular uniforms

Saskatoon Transit workers will wear their full uniforms when they start work on Wednesday.

Since March 8, bus drivers have been wearing casual clothes as a way to bring awareness to the fact the Amalgamated Transit Union 615 is still without a contract.

A statement on the City of Saskatoon’s website explained the city is eager to return to the negotiating table to reach a deal, “that meets the best interests of taxpayers, transit employees and customers of Saskatoon Transit.” The city has also started distributing letters to employees outlining the requirement to wear Saskatoon Transit uniforms.

“In the interests of public safety — and advancing our talks — we have requested the cooperation of the ATU Executive to encourage compliance of all ATU members in wearing their assigned uniforms,” the statement explained.

However, president of the ATU 615, Jim Yakubowski said on Tuesday the return to regular uniforms does not mean the executive is backing down.

“There’s nothing further from the truth,” he said. “We’ve stated to our members that we believe we’ve accomplished what we set out to do initially and that is to raise awareness.”

Jeff Jorgenson, general manager of transportation and utilities with the city said he’s pleased drivers will be returning to work in full uniform.

“The city is just happy that transit operators will be back in full uniform (Wednesday). Whatever circumstances lead to that, whether it was the city letter, or the ATU’s action is irrelevant,” he said.

“What is important is the citizens of Saskatoon and the customers of transit will see operators as they’re expected to see starting first thing tomorrow.”
